China Demands Global Vigilance Against Japan's "Neo-Militarism"

(MENAFN) China has called on the international community to remain firmly on guard against what it characterizes as a resurgence of Japanese neo-militarism, intensifying a war of words with Tokyo that erupted following a high-profile security summit in Singapore.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian issued the warning at a routine press briefing on Monday, directly countering remarks made by a senior Japanese defense official who, at the 23rd Shangri-La Dialogue 2026, rejected the characterization of Japan as a neo-militarist state.

Lin dismissed the Japanese official's position as entirely without merit, asserting it could not withstand scrutiny on historical, legal, or factual grounds.

He further cautioned that Tokyo's refusal to acknowledge such concerns would continue to erode its standing among Asian neighbors and the broader international community, making it impossible for Japan to earn their trust.

The exchange marks the latest flare-up in long-running tensions between Beijing and Tokyo over Japan's accelerating defense buildup, which China has repeatedly framed as a dangerous echo of the country's militarist past.
